11th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky - 6th-8th October 2011 in Osnabrück, Germany

1st Announcement

It is a pleasure to invite you to the 11th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky to the conference center unter.Bau in the Museum am Schölerberg in Osnabrück, Germany.

Osnabrück Markt

Location

Osnabrück is an old Hanse city with charming ancient houses around the city hall.

The Museum am Schölerberg is a natural sciences museum with a stong impact on ecological themes, mainly soil.

Within the museum you find a modern planetarium with conventional and digital projection technique.
The conference location unter.Bau with modern presentation facilities is located within the museum.

 

Aims

The Symposium will deal with the issues of light pollution, its causes, its negative effects and possible remedies.
Some of the issues will be:

  • measuring methods of light pollution
  • quality of dark sky parks
  • efficient dark sky friendly lighting
  • environmental impact (e.g. on insects, humans) of modern light sources (e.g. LEDs)

In Germany some important projects are under way:

We hope to have some presentations with first research results from these projects.

Call for Papers

Proposals for talks about these themes can be submitted till Aug. 31st 2011 to ahaenel@uos.de.
These should contain:
Title, authors/speaker with email, abstract, proposed time (10-25 minutes)
Please be prepared that the presentations will be published as pdf files on the conference page after the conference.

Exhibitions

There will be space for exhibitions e.g. from firms or environmental organisations. Please contact me (address below)!

Excursion

We plan an excursion to the possibly oldest astronomical observatories, the 5000 years old megalithic tombs, and the modern public astronomical observatory of the astronomical association.

Travel

By air
Next airport is Münster/Osnabrück FMO with mainly national flights but also some international connections (e.g. London-Stansted, Vienna with AirBerlin)
There is a public bus service (line X150) connecting to Osnabrück and which operates when flight leave or arrive. Travel time is about 40 minutes, one way costs 9,- EUR.

Airports with more low cost carriers are about 90 minutes away:

  • Bremen (Ryanair) tram and train to Osnabrück,
  • Dortmund (Easyjet, Wizz Air), bus and train to Osnabrück
  • Hannover, train to Osnabrück

By train
Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof is the main station. IC-trains on the North-South connection (Cologne/Düsseldorf/Essen - Bremen/Hamburg) stop about every hour. IC trains on the East-West connection (Berlin/Hannover - Amsterdam) stop every two hours. Detailed information (in different languages) available on www.bahn.de

By car
At Osnabrück the North-South highway (Hamburg-Dortmund) A1 and the East-West highway (Hannover-Amsterdam) A30 cross.
The conference location is close to exit 18 (Osnabrück-Nahne) on A30, go direction center, then go right at the first traffic sign. Easiest is to follow the signs to the "ZOO", then you get to the parking (Klaus-Strick-Weg 10)! Museum and Zoo are in the same building.

Environmental Badge

If you come with your own car to Germany you need an environmental badge for entering many cities. The museum is outside the environmental zone of Osnabrück, but if your hotel is inside, you need the badge. More information (in different languages) and ordering possibility: www.umwelt-plakette.de.

Public transport
Within Osnabrück public transport is organised by the Stadtwerke Osnabrück. You find information (sorry, only in German) › here.
From main station the direct bus line 21 connects to the museum (stop Kreishaus/Zoo), running every 30 minutes, monday-friday between 7 and 19 every 20 minutes. More information will be given when the new timetables are available (in August).
One single ticket costs 2,10 EUR, a ticket for 4 travels (4-Fahrten-Karte) 7,30 EUR, tickets can be bought at the bus driver.

Accomodation

Osnabrück offers a wide range of accomodation at different prices.
These can be booked via an internet reservation service like www.hrs.de (diferent languages) or the local reservation service (German or Dutch).

Next to the conference location is the youth hostel where members of the international youth hostal organisations can stay in 3 to 6 bed rooms, one night incl. breakfast costs 23,20 EUR, early booking is essential.

These hotels are close to bus stops of the bus line 21 for those travelling with public transport:
Hotel Westermann (60 EUR single/80 EUR double incl. breakfast)
Hotel Residenz (about the same)
Advena Hotel Hohenzollern (opposite main station, 85 EUR s, 120 EUR d incl. breakfast)

These hotels can be recommended to those arriving by car:
Cafe Waldesruh (40 EUR)
Am Wulfter Turm (45 EUR)
Ibis (> 65 EUR + 10 EUR breakfast)
